VP/HR — Security situation in Nagorno-Karabakh

Question for written answer P-002735-16
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Ilhan Kyuchyuk (ALDE)

Increased fighting in and around the region of Nagorno-Karabakh highlights the need for a peaceful solution to the conflict. The reports coming in of civilian casualties and the destruction of schools and other civilian buildings are very worrisome.

The United Nations Security Council has adopted several resolutions on the conflict (UN Security Council Resolutions 822 (1993), 853 (1993), 874 (1993) and 884 (1993)), but unfortunately these have not been complied with.

1. What action have the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the European Union taken to encourage compliance with these resolutions?

2. In light of the current fighting, what actions can the EEAS take to convince all the parties to comply with these resolutions?

3. What specific and immediate actions will the EEAS and the European Union take in order for the hostilities to end and for occupying forces to be withdrawn?
