Question for written answer P-001301-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Lucy Anderson (S&D)
Although in the 2012 ‘Water Blueprint’ report the Commission suggested a number of solutions to tackle Europe’s water problems, some of the main concerns such as water pollution and excessive water use are still harming the ecosystem. In addition, according to Parliament’s resolution of 8 September 2015 on the follow-up to the European Citizens’ Initiative Right2Water[1], the Commission has failed to respond adequately to the Right2Water Citizens’ Initiative to help guarantee affordable access to clean water as a basic human right. Could the Commission therefore please state:
- 1.What progress has been made on assessing the need for a stronger role for provinces and regions and their responsible water authorities to ensure alignment with overall policies, including the ability to manage fairly the conflict between water quality objectives and agricultural priorities?
- 2.Whether the Commission will bring forward more concrete measures to reinforce the importance of water as a public good, including in relation to governance issues?
- 3.To what extent likely forthcoming laws on water re-use will acknowledge that differences in water availability between regions must be taken into account in a justified manner, as highlighted by the Committee of the Regions in its recommendations of 9 February 2017?
