Various reports emerging from Libya have exposed the shocking reality of the country’s slave trade. Hundreds of people originating from Central African countries are reportedly being tortured, abused and humiliated before being auctioned off as slaves.

The shocking revelations have exposed grave human rights violations in the region, which are being amplified due to the instability in the area.

The EU must, together with international stakeholders, act to end the horrific tragedy occurring just south of Europe’s shores.

— What action is the Commission taking in this regard?

— Has the Commission taken steps to mobilise the international community, such as the United Nations, in order to reach out to the Libyan authorities on the matter?

— Is the Commission planning to take any action to monitor human rights violations in Libya?
