Safeguarding the precautionary principle in the EU-Mercosur trade agreement

According to Greenpeace Austria[1], the trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur states is not only threatening certain branches of the EU’s domestic agriculture, meat production in particular, but may also represent a threat to the precautionary principle.

1. What assessments and studies have been carried out thus far to evaluate the impact of the recently negotiated beef quota on EU agricultural producers? What were their findings?

2. According to the source mentioned above, the precautionary principle is not part of the agreement. How will the Commission ensure that this essential element of EU consumer protection is enforced nonetheless, bearing in mind that recent meat scandals in Brazil[2] have undermined consumer trust in the quality of meat from South America?
