Water supply problems in Thessaloniki
2.4.2018
Question for written answer P-001957-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Maria Spyraki (PPE)
For the seventh consecutive day there have been problems with Thessaloniki’s water supply. In particular, many areas have been completely without water for days, while there have also been periodic cuts in areas where the problem has since been rectified.
As a result, vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children in these areas have no access to clean drinking water, since the water is cloudy in areas where water supply has been partially restored.
Furthermore, according to the website of the Water Supply & Sewerage Company of Thessaloniki (EYATH) — the company responsible — a project entitled ‘Remote Control and Automation of the Water Supply System of the EYATH Servicing Area’, with a budget of EUR 4.15 million, appears to have been accepted for co-funding.
Given that the problem is due to poor maintenance of water infrastructure and distribution networks, can the Commission say:
- 1.What provision exists for financing water supply projects with Community funds?
- 2.Has the Water Supply & Sewerage Company of Thessaloniki received Community funding in the past and has it submitted relevant plans to fund network infrastructure improvements over the past five years?
- 3.What stage of implementation has the co-funded project reached and when is it due to be completed?
