Preparation of the European Council meeting of 19 and 20 October 2017 (debate)
Cecilia Wikström (ALDE). – Mr President, in my capacity as rapporteur for the reform of the Dublin Regulation, I am convinced that this House is about to find a common position, gathering broad support for backing bold, ambitious and realistic reforms. However, we need our counterparts in the Council – and I would ask them to stop pandering back to domestic egoism – to engage with us in building a common European asylum system which is fit for purpose.
For too long, the Council has tried to find unanimity. Instead, it should try to find solutions to fix the broken, collapsed common European asylum system. Now it is high time to find solutions, and also one position. To the Estonian Presidency, I would like to say: stand firm. Knowing some Member States, you will never find unanimity, but a qualified majority is perfectly good enough, according to the Treaties. In my negotiating team, we are determined.
