European Parliament resolution on Fiji 
B6‑0660/06

The European Parliament,

   having regard to Rule 115(5) of its Rules of Procedure,
   A.worried by the recent bloodless military coup d'état overthrowing a democratically elected government of Mr Qarase,
   B.whereas tension escalated between the Prime Minister Qarase and the military commander Bainimarama after Qarase pushed a head with a reconciliation bill that could give amnesties to the 2000 coup convicts and suspects,
   C.whereas The Prime Minister Qarase was re-elected for the second term mandate last May,
   D.whereas the Fiji constitutional democracy is scared by three previous coup d'états since the country became independent in 1970,
   E.whereas Fiji is a signatory of the Cotonou agreement in which respect of human rights and rule of law are explicitly mentioned,
   1.Condemns the seizure of power by means of military coup d'état and condemns the overthrow of democratically elected government;
   2.Calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and demand the return to democratic civilian rule and the rule of law;
   3.Calls for the immediate restoration of the legitimate government of Fiji and the return to constitutional rule;
   4.Calls on the Commission and Member States to closely monitor the situation in Fiji and, where appropriate, to start consultations under Article 96 of the Cotonou Partnership Agreement, which could lead to a partial or full suspension of EU development assistance;
   5.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the governments of the Member States, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Governments of the Pacific Islands Forum countries and the ACP Co-Presidents.
