Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the feed given to organically farmed salmon
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Council Regulation (EEC) No 2092/91 of 24 June 1991,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas the findings of a study carried out by the French association 60 millions de consommateurs (60 million consumers), which were published in November 2016, confirmed the trends identified in 2014, namely the fact that a larger proportion of the diet of organically farmed salmon consists of animal products makes the fish more prone to contamination with metals (mercury, arsenic, lead) than non-organically farmed salmon;
B. having regard to the risks posed to public health by the presence of even small quantities of these metals in organically farmed salmon intended for human consumption;
C. whereas the amounts of these metals found in organically farmed salmon can be reduced by increasing the share of their feed accounted for by plant products;
1. Urges the Commission to do away with the ceiling of 60% of organic plant products per feed ration for organically farmed salmon laid down by Commission Regulation (EC) No 710/2009 of 5 August 2009;
2. Urges the Commission to introduce a maximum authorised threshold of 75% of animal products per feed ration for organically farmed salmon.
