Motion for a resolution of the European Parliament on the support for and promotion of regional and local linguistic and cultural heritage  
B8‑0479/2018

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  considering the many languages and cultures that make up Europe’s linguistic and cultural heritage;

B.  considering the Charter for Regional or Minority Languages;

C.  considering that UNESCO also recognises as languages many regional and local dialects which have not yet obtained formal linguistic protection;

D.  considering that multilingualism is promoted by the European Union as a key tool for living, studying and working in Europe;

E.  considering that the promotion of the linguistic and historical-cultural heritage is a key element of major economic sectors in Europe, in particular agri-foodstuffs, handicrafts and tourism;

1.  Calls on the Commission to promote and support initiatives and projects for the research, dissemination and promotion of the cultural and linguistic heritage of the languages and cultures of the regions and territories of the Union;

2.  Calls on the Commission to promote the learning and teaching of regional and local languages and cultures in schools at all levels.
