Question for oral answer to the Commission Rule 115 Romana Jordan, Glenis Willmott, Rebecca Taylor, Carl Schlyter, Marina Yannakoudakis, on behalf of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety
Subject: Alcohol strategy
Misuse of alcohol is the second-largest lifestyle-related cause of disease in Europe and a risk factor for alcohol addiction for over 60 chronic diseases. Europe also has the highest rate of consumption of alcohol in the world.
There are uncertainties surrounding the future of EU action to support Member States in combating alcohol-related harm.
In light of the above and in the interest of public health and society at large, will the Commission review its decision not to update its alcohol strategy? Can the Commission explain if anything else is being done in addition to this plan?
Would the Commission be willing to produce the report on the application of the requirements to provide information on ingredients and nutrition information to alcoholic beverages by December 2014 as laid down in Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers?
