Parliamentary questions
19 January 2016
O-000006/2016
Question for oral answer
to the Commission
Rule 128
Iratxe García Pérez, on behalf of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality

Subject: New Strategy for Gender Equality and Women's Rights post-2015
 Answer

The hitherto current strategy for equality between women and men ended in 2015. In a resolution of 9 June 2015, Parliament underlined the need and urgency for the Commission to present a new, dedicated Strategy for Gender Equality and Women’s Rights within the EU. So far, the Commissioner responsible has repeatedly committed to delivering a post-2015 strategy. On 3 December 2015 the Commission presented its ‘Strategic engagement for gender equality 2016-2019’, considered as its reference framework for gender equality policy post-2015. However, this is only a staff working document, and as such has not been adopted by the Commission: nor does it have interinstitutional value.

Why did the Commission not adopt a transparent and public communication for a ‘New Strategy for Gender Equality and Women’s Rights post-2015’, in line with its European and international objectives and agenda?

Taking into account the views of civil society, as expressed through the public consultation and those of the Advisory Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men, as well as Parliament’s own position as expressed in its resolution of 9 June 2015 and the opinion of the EPSCO Council of 7 December 2015, can the Commission inform us as to when it will present its official strategy on gender equality?

How will the Commission work with the Dutch Presidency with regard both to its commitment and to the related commitments of the trio presidency, with a view to presenting a set of draft Council conclusions on gender equality to EPSCO in March 2016?
