ORAL QUESTION for Question Time at the part-session in September II 2006 pursuant to Rule 109 of the Rules of Procedure by Frank Vanhecke to the Council

Subject: Regularisation of illegal immigrants in Italy
 Answer

In January-February 2005, the Zapatero Socialist government in Spain made it possible for some
800 000 illegal immigrants to regularise their status. Now the new left-wing Prodi II government is similarly regularising the status of people who are in Italy illegally.

Because of the free movement of persons, hundreds of thousands of people who have undergone this procedure will soon be able to cross Europe's internal without hindrance.

Austria's Minister for Home Affairs, Mrs Liese Prokop, has rightly pointed out the damaging impact of such decisions on other Member States and called for agreements between the Member States on uniform action against illegal immigrants, while in principle aliens policy remains a national matter.

What is the Council's view of this proposal?
