ORAL QUESTION for Question Time at the part-session in September II 2006 pursuant to Rule 109 of the Rules of Procedure by Georgios Karatzaferis to the Commission
Subject: Ruling in favour of Greek building cooperatives
According to reports in the Greek press (e.g. the newspaper Ethnos of 17 July 2006, etc.), the European Court of Human Rights has ruled in favour of an appeal lodged by a Greek building cooperative whose property had been confiscated by the Greek State (for decades) as being 'woodland', despite the fact that the Greek State itself had officially recognised that cooperative and 325 other cooperatives and that their members had paid their contributions regularly and continue to do so. Strangely enough, only the Commission remains unconcerned about this matter, despite the fact that the European Parliament - through the chairman of the Committee on Petitions, Mr Libicki - has called on the Greek Prime Minister, Mr Karamanlis, to resolve the situation.
Is the Commission not aware that everyone - except itself - recognises that the Greek authorities are acting illegally in holding the property of 1.5 million Greeks and other EU nationals in Greece? What action will the Commission take in regard to the Greek authorities?
