ORAL QUESTION for Question Time at the part-session in December 2007 pursuant to Rule 109 of the Rules of Procedure by Athanasios Pafilis to the Council
The recent report by the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency and its Director-General, Mohamed ElBaradei, on Iran's nuclear programme establishes that the programme is peaceful and is not being used for military purposes. It also points out that decisions to impose sanctions, to date, have been based on false information. The report clearly states that the Iranian authorities are cooperating fully and that the information provided is fully consistent with the data gathered by the Agency. Despite these assurances, the USA and the EU continue to threaten sanctions against Iran. However, experience shows that sanctions are unjust and that the people of the country will be the ones to suffer.
Does the Council accept the findings of the IAEA report? Will the EU withdraw any threats to impose sanctions on Iran, which are based, as evidenced, on false information?
