 Subject: Abortion

1. Is the Commission aware of the Tysiac case(1) (7 February 2006), which is currently before the European Court of Human Rights?

2. What steps will the Commission be taking in this connection?

3. To what extent does the Commission see a role for itself in improving the rights and position of women in Poland?

4. How far is the Commission aware of other initiatives within the European Union relating to abortion legislation in Poland and does it intend to play a role or adopt a position in this connection?

5. Is the Commission aware of the newspaper article of 3 May 2007 (Het Volk.be) concerning the Irish girl who wanted to have an abortion in England but was prevented from doing so by the Irish health service, which had a travel ban imposed by the police?

6. Will the Commission be taking steps to call Ireland to account for this action, which contravenes the right to patient mobility within the EU?

7. Does the Commission see a role for itself in the face of the fact that thousands of Irish women travel to England every year to have abortions?
