WRITTEN QUESTION by Rebecca Harms (Verts/ALE) to the Commission

Subject: Radioactive wood pellets in Italy
 Answer(s)

A DPA news agency report broadcast at the beginning of June 2009 mentioned radioactive wood pellets imported into Italy from Lithuania.

1. When, from whom and how was it established that the wood pellets are radioactive?

2. Are the pellets externally contaminated or do they contain radioactivity?

3. What activity inventory do the individual pellets contain, and what activity concentration in Bq/g — indicating which radionuclides in each case — do ashes from the individual pellets contain?

4. What binding values have been adopted in Italy for exemption and clearance in respect of the abovementioned radionuclides?

5. Does the Commission know the origin of the pellets and how they became radioactive?

6. Were the pellets only imported for certain consumers or for general sale in Italy?

7. What similar cases does the Commission know of in other Member States and how will it ensure that no fresh cases arise?
