 Subject: Corporate social responsibility, individual rights at the workplace and consumer behaviour

Under the Lisbon Treaty, individual rights at the workplace and employment are fundamental principles of the European Union. Intensive efforts are accordingly being made and new initiatives launched to consolidate the culture of corporate social responsibility in the European Union. In view of the recent suicides in China among the staff of Foxconn, a company supplying computer components to a large number of multinationals which have plant in the EU and naturally supply the European market with their products:

1. What additional measures will the Commission take in order to consolidate corporate social responsibility and responsible behaviour by consumers with a view to reviving and reorienting the internal market?
2. What additional initiatives will it adopt in order to step up efforts to ensure compliance with international conventions concerning individual rights at the workplace worldwide in the context of EU trade relations with third countries?
3. Will it introduce social labelling for products entering the single European market so as to enable consumers to make informal decisions on the basis of ethical criteria (such as individual rights, conditions at the workplace, etc.)?
