Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 117
Nessa Childers (S&D)

 Subject: Disaster capitalism

Is the Commission aware of the problem of ‘disaster capitalism’? This is when companies take advantage of a very vulnerable situation and turn it into a market opportunity, like ‘disaster marketing’, when companies donate, say, EUR 10 000 as part of their corporate social responsibility but then spend EUR 20 000 on promoting their donation, or when companies donate huge amounts of aid for relief efforts but then oblige the aid agencies to purchase their products. Some examples of this came to light in recent disasters like that in Haiti.

Will the Commission examine this issue within Europe and assess any European multinationals which may be involved in such practices?
