Subject: VP/HR — The case of Ayatollah Kazemeyni Boroujerdi
During the last 30 years or so, Ayatollah Kazemeyni Boroujerdi and other clergy members have voiced their opposition to the imposition of a ‘perverse’ version of religion in Iran.
During this time, Ayatollah Boroujerdi has sought to resist Islamist fundamentalism, anti-semitism and terrorism, and has advocated a separation between the state and religion. As a consequence, he and his supporters have been victimised by the Tehran regime, both politically and through the courts.
He was imprisoned from 2006 until January 2017, and was only released after his health started to deteriorate significantly in December 2016. According to Amnesty International and the National Council of Resistance of Iran, his health was seriously compromised by his treatment in prison.
Given that the European Union is already aware of this case, as it was the subject of Parliament resolution of 16 November 2006 on the situation in Iran and Written Question E-007820/2014:
What action does the Commission intend to take to maintain diplomatic and public pressure on the Iranian authorities in the case of Ayatollah Boroujerdi?
Will the Commission act to ensure that Ayatollah Boroujerdi receives all the appropriate medical care, especially any care that is required as a consequence of the alleged torture and abuse that he suffered while in prison?
