Question for written answer
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Hannu Takkula (ALDE)

Subject:  VP/HR — Threats to the religious freedom of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia
 Answer(s)

The Ministry of Justice in Russia has made the following four requests to the Russian Supreme Court: that the religious organisation named the Administrative Centre of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia be declared extremist and its activity be banned; that this religious organisation and its local organisations be liquidated and that it be deleted from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities; that its property and that of its local religious organisations be turned over, once creditors’ demands have been satisfied, to the ownership of the Russian Federation; and that, as part of the decision to liquidate it, the termination of all its activities and those of its local religious organisations be implemented immediately.

What does the Vice-President/High Representative plan to do to safeguard the freedom of religion and belief of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia?

How will the Vice-President/High Representative guarantee that human rights apply equally to all Russian citizens?
