Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 130
Maria Lidia Senra Rodríguez (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  Discharging of untreated water into the River Tea
 Answer(s)

The water treatment plant belonging to Ponteareas Council in Galicia is discharging large quantities of untreated water directly into the River Tea, which forms part of the Natura 2000 network. This claim can be proven by images of the site that were captured on video by the ecologist group Adenco(1), who have reported this situation to the Guardia Civil, the Xunta de Galicia’s Ministry for the Environment, the Miño-Sil Water Authority and Ponteareas Council itself.

As a result of these reports, the Water Authority opened sanction proceedings against Ponteareas Council some months ago, compounding the events of 2013, when it was given a fine amounting to EUR 84 000 for similar discharging of untreated water.

Ten years ago, the Commission brought infringement proceedings(2) against the Spanish Government for failure to comply with Directive 91/271/EEC on the treatment of urban waste water in Ponteareas, yet, a decade later, these discharges continue.

1. Does the Commission intend to take any new action to avoid the continued damaging of this natural area of Community importance?

2. Is the Commission investigating what is going on?
