Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 130
Nikolaos Chountis (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  Large increase in migratory flows across the land borders between Greece and Turkey
 Answer(s)

Since the beginning of the year, there has been a significant increase in the flow of refugees to Greece across the river Evros, with recorded arrivals estimated at over 75 every day.

Indeed, in April, according to official data, 3 986 refugees, mainly of Syrian or Iraqi origin, arrived in Greece, and at least seven persons, including five children, have been killed since the beginning of the year while attempting to cross the river.

Given the fact that

— The rules of the EU‐Turkey Joint Action Plan do not apply to the geographical area in question, — The situation in the hotspots on the Aegean islands remains dramatic due to overcrowding, with thousands of persons being held in desperate conditions — in fact their lives are at risk, given the outbreak of infectious diseases, — An increase in migratory flows is expected in the summer months,

Will the Commission say:

What information does it have about the entry into Greece of refugees and migrants across the river Evros?
What does it intend to do in cooperation with the Greek authorities?
