Drug trafficking in Kosovo

WRITTEN QUESTION P-6458/08
by Roberto Fiore (NI)
to the Commission

Many of the drug trafficking routes from Afghanistan through Turkey, Bulgaria and Macedonia cross in Kosovo.

Within a 30 km radius of the Bondsteel US base there are three laboratories that produce and refine the raw material.

The action taken against this has been minimal, with only 36 kilogrammes being seized, out of the several tonnes of heroin and cocaine that have been produced.

Armed forces from Community countries are based in these regions.

What measures will be taken to remedy this extremely serious situation, in the light of the investigative work carried out by the Prosecutor, Carla Del Ponte, and the fact that military forces are present on the ground but have no power to take action against such criminal behaviour?
