Subject: Refugee and human rights situation in Sinai
 Answer(s)

Many international human rights organisations have been reporting on the plight of hundreds of refugees in Sinai. About a year ago (on 16 December 2010), when it adopted a resolution on Eritrean refugees held hostage in Sinai (P7_TA(2010)0496), Parliament called for the EU High Representative to treat this matter as a priority in the political dialogue between the EU and Egypt. There has, however, been no significant progress since then, and even after the Arab Spring the refugee situation in Sinai remains alarming.

How in practical terms does the Commission propose to make headway in this matter, together with Egypt’s present leaders? What is the current situation in the Sinai Peninsula as far as refugees and human rights are concerned? What measures will the Commission take to stop the torture, people smuggling, organ trafficking, and other human rights violations?
