Question for written answer
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Salvatore Domenico Pogliese (PPE)

Subject:  VP/HR — Extradition to Italy of Cesare Battisti

Italian terrorist Cesare Battisti has been sentenced to life imprisonment for four murders. A fugitive from justice for more than 36 years, he is now living in Brazil. It has been reported in the press that Brazil’s Prosecutor General has reiterated that the ultimate decision on the extradition of Cesare Battisti is a political decision, not a judicial one, which means that it is solely the responsibility of the President of the Republic, Temer.

Can the Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy say whether, in the light of the above position adopted by the Brazilian Public Prosecutor’s Office and in view of the extradition request submitted by Italy in September 2017, she intends to take any measures to incite President Temer to take the decision to carry out this extradition?
