May opening: new Ombudsman candidates

President Schulz announced the six eligible candidates for the post of European Ombudsman, condemned Lega Nord MEP Mario Borghezio's radio remarks about Italy's Minister for Integration Cécile Kyenge Kashetu, and voiced support for Chinese human rights activist Cheng Guangcheng, in his opening address.

IDAHO: EU human rights record will not be satisfactory until homophobia is defeated

Despite the recent steps forward in certain countries, discrimination of the LGBT people in Europe remains worrying. We are rightly proud to be the continent of human rights, tolerance and respect. However, our record will not be satisfactory until discrimination, abuse, violence and harassment linked to sexual orientation is defeated.
