European Parliament President welcomes breakthrough in EU-Japan trade negotiations

Press Release

European Parliament President, Antonio Tajani, welcomed the breakthrough in EU-Japan trade negotiations following a meeting with Economic Revitalization Minister, Nobuteru Ishihara and members of the Japanese National Diet.

President Tajani declared:

“The European Union and Japan are more than trading partners, we are friends who have worked together closely for decades. Deepening our relationship will not only strengthen the EU’s economy by creating jobs and boosting growth for European workers and families at home.  It will mean further opening a market where demand for high-quality products, that both large and small European companies excel in producing, is very high.

“Just like with CETA, this agreement sends a clear signal that the European Union is an ambitious negotiator that sets the bar high when it comes to international trade. Europeans want the EU to continue to set rules globally through open and fair trade that delivers a level playing field while protecting our standards. The EU-Japan free trade agreement will do that and I look forward to MEPs giving it their final approval in due course.”
