Meeting between the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, and the Director General of the FAO, José Graziano da Silva, focusing on migration and the next EU summit
“To solve the problem of migration flows and stop the departures we must also fight hunger and famine in Africa. Millions of people continue to die, or live on the brink of death, and hundreds of thousands are heading to Europe in search of hope.” said the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, coming out of a meeting held today in Rome with the Director General of the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO), José Graziano da Silva. Migration flows, also in the context of the next European Council summit, topped the meeting’s agenda.
“The time for words is over”, said Tajani “We have to take concrete actions. The next European Council at the end of June is duty bound to provide effective answers not only on the reform of the asylum system, but also with regard to a Marshall Plan for Africa. At least 40 billion are needed in the next EU budget to stimulate the continent's growth.”
President Tajani will soon be going to Libya and Niger to assess the situation and offer the support of the European Parliament to these countries. His meeting today served to prepare these missions and to strengthen cooperation between the FAO and the European Union. Tajani also invited General Manager Da Silva to a meeting with political leaders in the European Parliament to delve deeper into these issues.
