Today we are discussing some very serious topics but also commemorating a milestone in our ability to face up to protecting vulnerable groups: the 25th Anniversary of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. The adoption of the Convention and its rapid ratification were major steps forward for bettering children's rights. It has led to countless initiatives and tangible results the world over. Preparations for the EXPO Milan are in full swing. This exhibition is a good testimony of how advanced works are. I am glad that the European Parliament was chosen as one of the first places to present the projects of the European Union and its Member States. The EXPO is first and foremost an event intended to establish a dialogue with, and between, citizens. (Read more)

On 9 November 25 years ago the eyes of the whole word were fixed on Berlin. And the whole world was a witness as courageous men and women tore down the Berlin Wall. A wall which symbolised the arbitrary division of Germany and Europe, guarded by soldiers, fortified by barbed wire, made concrete by this very Wall, a wall of fear, across which two superpowers eyed one another as enemies; at which two political systems collided; a wall which had brutally rent families, a country, an entire continent apart. This painful division was ended by a peaceful revolution. Not one single tank rumbled through the streets. Not one single shot was fired. Not one single drop of blood was shed. A magical moment in the history of Germany and the start of a new era in Europe. (Read more)

zunächst möchte ich Herrn Dr. Pöttering und der Konrad Adenauer Stiftung dafür danken, dass Sie die "Europa - Rede" als feste Marke im politischen Kalender der Hauptstadt etabliert haben. Gerade an einem 9. November, diesem für uns Deutsche so ambivalenten Tag, dem Tag der Ausrufung der Republik nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg 1918, dem Tag des versuchten Hitler-Ludendorff-Putsches 1923, dem Tag der „Reichspogromnacht“ 1938, der ein Tag der Schande für unsere Nation wurde, dieser Tag, der 1989 mit dem Fall der Berliner Mauer auch ein Glückstag wurde; an diesem Tag, der die Tief-und Höhepunkte deutscher Geschichte wie wohl kaum ein anderer Tag versinnbildlicht, über aktuelle europapolitische Fragen nachzudenken, ist eine ausgezeichnete Initiative.
