Let me first thank BusinessEurope, especially its Director General Markus Beyrer, and the Director General of the European Business Summit Arnaud Thysen, for the invitation and for organising this timely conference on the future of Europe. Europe today is one of the richest regions in the world. Our citizens enjoy one of the highest standards of living. They also benefit from what is possibly the world’s highest level of protection of fundamental rights. Our businesses, for their part, can conduct their activities in an environment of legal certainty, with an impressive pool of highly educated people to stay on the forefront in their sector. It is my pleasure to welcome you back to the European Parliament. We last met in Strasbourg in 2013 when we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Sakharov Prize. On that occasion, we committed to meeting regularly, so I'm proud to be here with you again today. As President of the European Parliament, I have had the honour to present the Sakharov Prize to Laureates from countries as diverse as Myanmar, Cuba, Pakistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Agradezco a la Fundación Europea de Yuste, al Gobierno de Extremadura y muy especialmente a Su Majestad el Rey la invitación a participar en un acto tan especial, en una fecha tan señalada y en un lugar tan simbólico. En su libro ‘Viajes por España’, el escritor Pedro Antonio de Alarcón recomendaba vivamente visitar Yuste «a quien sea algo jinete, cuente con cuatro días y treinta duros de sobra y tenga algún conocido en Navalmoral de la Mata que proporcione caballo y guía».
