Press Release - Strasbourg - 27-10-2016

Drawings by Ali Ferzat, 2011 Sakharov Prize laureate
By awarding the Sakharov Prize to Nadia Murad and Lamiya Aji Bashar, the European Parliament asserts its support for freedom of thought as one of the fundamental human rights, a right which must be respected everywhere, with no exception. Nadia Murad and Lamiya Aji Bashar share a painful and tragic story: both of them have had to witness the atrocities committed by the so-called Islamic State, both of them have seen their closest family killed, and both of them have been denigrated to sex slaves and exploited. Speech of the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, at the European Council of 20 October 2016

Speeches - Internal Policies and EU Institutions - Brussels - 20-10-2016

 (Brussels ).
I come with a clear message to you from the European Parliament: acting to stop the bloodshed in Syria should be the number one priority on your list. We have witnessed with utter dismay the relentless bombing of Aleppo by the Syrian regime with the air support of Russia. Once more, it has shattered the Syrians’ hope of ending the war. Once again, all principles of international law have been breached. Allow me to thank President Hollande for his strong stance against any impunity for those involved in war crimes. The European Parliament calls for consequences and accountability for those guilty of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. (Read more)

I am delighted that Mr Guterres, a European candidate with vast experience, won such an overwhelming confidence from the members of the Security Council. This constitutes a very strong base upon which the new UN Secretary General can begin working from. (Read more)

Speech at the Interreligious Dialogue - “The future of the Jewish Communities in Europe”

Speeches - Internal Policies and EU Institutions - Brussels - 27-09-2016

Martin Schulz.
I would like to thank you for participating in the sixth Interreligious Dialogue meeting, organised by the European Parliament. We have heard diverse contributions from our panellists and I am grateful that you all engaged in a fruitful discussion. The Interreligious Dialogue in its current format has become a true tradition of our house. This dialogue between religions in the face of today’s challenges is maybe more necessary than ever. Because you as religious representatives have a crucial role to play. You carry a huge responsibility. You help shape our core values, you help to promote them among our people and you help bridge divides in our societies. (Read more)

It is a great honour to be invited here - once again - at your prestigious university. Last time I was here, on 5 February of this year, I argued that we needed the UK to make the EU stronger and better. I painted a picture of a world in 2050 in which no single EU Member State was in the G7. And where Europeans made up just 5.4% of the world population. I pleaded for a smart coexistence between the regional, the national and the European levels, not the triumphant return of the nation state as a solution for all problems. (Read more)

Schulz’s statement following his visit to Turkey

Press Release - Foreign Affairs - Internal Policies and EU Institutions - Ankara - 01-09-2016

 (Brussels ).
Today’s meetings were a good opportunity to hold a frank, open and productive discussion on the state of EU-Turkey relations after weeks of undue estrangement. Turkey is a partner and a candidate country to the European Union. We must be able to speak openly to highlight progress, but also to engage constructively in the challenges faced. (Read more)
