On the death of Oswaldo Payá, Sakharov Prize winner
Commenting on the death of political activist Oswaldo Payá in Cuba, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz stated:
"The loss of Oswaldo Payá in Cuba is sad news for all those who believe and fight for freedom and democracy in the world.
The European Parliament awarded him with the Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought in 2002, to acknowledge his work for the Varela Project - a campaign to support a referendum in favour of fundamental freedoms and civil rights in Cuba.
Oswaldo Payá's ideas will survive: his work and commitment have inspired a generation of Cuban activists that are following his example in promoting political freedom and human rights.
In this tragic moment, I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, as well as to those of fellow activist Harold Cepero, who died in the same accident. We wish a speedy recovery to the two injured Ángel Carromero and Aron Modig."
