The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz made the following statement on the situation in Syria.

"One year after the uprising against the regime in Syria, the Syrian people are the victims of a daily violence and atrocities. The latest bloodshed in Damascus is another example of tragic loss of life. The UN estimates more than 8,000 people have been killed in this terrible violence.

Let me underline that there is no other solution than a political solution to the situation in Syria.

The European Parliament offers its unconditional support to the United Nations Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan.

The international community must react in unity to stop the Syrian people's suffering."
