The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, made the following statement on the massacre in Houla, Syria:

"On behalf of the European Parliament, I condemn the Syrian regime for the abhorrent massacre in Houla. Our thoughts and condolences go to the families of the victims - many of whom are young children. The UN observers have confirmed the appalling actions of the regime in Houla, despite an agreed ceasefire. What happened in Houla may well constitute war-crimes. The perpetrators must be brought to justice, there will be no impunity for the regime.

The European Parliament stands solidly behind the Syrian people and I reiterate the call for Assad to step aside. We offer our full support to Kofi Annan, and we must see now a strong and united reaction from the international community."
