Introduction - I am delighted to see so many people here today. The date and venue for this event were not chosen haphazardly. Yesterday was World Refugee Day. Tomorrow will see the start of a European Council meeting which could - at long last - mark a turning point in EU immigration policy. (Read more)
Managing migration is one of our citizens’ main concerns. This is clear in the results of the European Parliament’s most recent Eurobarometer survey. This should come as no surprise. For more than a decade now, against the backdrop of the worsening situation in Syria and the instability besetting Libya, news reports have been painting a disastrous picture. We are all too familiar with the images of capsizing boats in the Mediterranean, corpses in the desert, lifeless children on beaches. (Read more)

European Parliament President on the End of Roaming Fees

I am proud that today’s date, 15 June 2017, will stand for the end of roaming charges in the European Union for our citizens. This is a historic achievement that heralds a new era for students, business travellers and tourists alike. Finally, Europeans from all walks of life will be able to travel throughout the EU without incurring the often huge additional expense incurred for making calls or using the internet abroad. Today we are celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the Erasmus programme. It is a great success story which has helped to bring Europe, and all the freedoms and opportunities it represents, closer to nine million young people. It is no coincidence that the programme should have taken its name from Erasmus of Rotterdam, a great humanist of the Renaissance. He was one of the fathers of free thought and free universities, which are at the heart of our identity as Europeans. (Read more)
