Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan is expected by the end of the year, and preparatory work and consultations are currently ongoing to shape the plan, set priorities and outline future action. This workshop looks into one of the key topics, modifiable risk factors and cancer prevention. Experts from all across the cancer spectrum will discuss with MEPs the state of play and main challenges, with a special angle on paediatric, digestive and HPV cancers.

This hearing will examine the state of international law on freedom of thought, conscience and religion and study lessons learned from past policies and actions that have contributed towards its protection. Participants will also discuss best practices of interreligious dialogue for promoting tolerance and fighting against discrimination based on religious motivations. The EU must continue its efforts to protect freedom of thought, conscience and religion, without fostering a particular belief, both inside and outside its borders.

The hearing takes place in the context of the Parliament's implementation report on the Dublin III Regulation, of which the draft will be presented in the LIBE Committee this spring. The Hearing is organised to contribute to the fact finding for the report. The report has the objective to support the work of the Parliament with regard to the Commission's New Pact on Migration and Asylum to be presented equally this spring. The list of speakers will include EU institution representatives, national authorities as well as NGOs.

Four experts from Portugal, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Belgium will debate with TRAN Members on the role of public transport in low-density areas. They will raise the specific characteristics and challenges faced by those areas and the resulting importance of services ensuring mobility. The hearing should provide an overview of good practices and case studies and would outline possible recommendations (logistics, pricing policies, etc.) for the future.

The objective of this hearing is to listen to different stakeholders about the current challenges facing the aquaculture sector, notably linked to production. The speakers include fish farmers from varied realities, ranging from sea-based aquaculture in the Atlantic and Mediterranean to the ponds of the Czech Republic. Other speakers include researchers and entrepreneurs involved in developing innovative practices, from Hungary, Belgium and Croatia.

The EP approved an own-initiative report entitled "Towards a sustainable and competitive European aquaculture sector" in 2018, in which it stressed the need to stimulate diversification and innovation in aquaculture. In the meantime, the European Commission is expected to publish new strategic guidelines for the development of aquaculture later in 2020.

It will look at different questions related to the use of Artificial Intelligence in this context, such as benefits and risks of this new technology, predictive policing, facial recognition, as well as the ethical and fundamental rights implications. It will also take stock of current work conducted by the Council of Europe. The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA).

In the first part, the members of the delegation will meet petitioners in Sofia along with the responsible state authorities, professional associations, consumer protection organizations and the Bulgarian Ombudsman to discuss issues related to the banking system and private enforcement agents.

In the second part, the delegation will address another topical issue: waste management. MEPs will visit the landfill in the town of Montana and meet with the city's mayor and the regional environmental bodies to discuss alleged shortcomings regarding access to documents in environmental matters.

The aim of the hearing is to explore the opportunities and challenges that two new technologies – artificial intelligence and blockchain – present for the single market. The hearing will be made up of two panels of experts: the first dealing with the use of AI tools in the services sector; the second dealing with the potential of blockchain to improve product safety.

The AI panel will address questions like the following: To what extent does the EU's regulatory framework for services need to be adapted? Are the transparency obligations in the e-Commerce Directive adequate in the age of AI-algorithms? Are EU rules for AI-powered professional services adequate to ensure the protection of consumers?

The Blockchain panel will address questions like the following: What role could blockchain play in the EU's product safety framework, for example making market surveillance and traceability of products more effective? Can DLTs improve the quality and accessibility of product information for consumers? What role can standardisation play in ensuring interoperability of DLTs and avoiding fragmentation and technical barriers within the single market?

The aim of the hearing is discuss the different aspects of planned obsolescence from a consumer protection perspective. Panellists are invited to share their views on the causes and facts behind product obsolescence, to comment on existing policy measures and to issue recommendations for a possible future EU regulatory framework to counter planned obsolescence, with a focus on ensuring a high degree of consumer protection.

In particular, the panellists may comment on recommended consumer information obligations and product labelling (e.g. mandatory durability labelling, reparability scoring systems), consumer rights (right to repair, specificities of IoT goods, software obsolescence), on pioneering national legislation such as the French or Italian examples and initiatives promoting product durability, repair and sustainable consumption in general.
