North-East Atlantic fish stock disputes: The mackerel and herring conflicts

International disputes have arisen over the fishing of herring and mackerel in the North-East Atlantic following the unilateral raising of fishing quotas for these stocks by Iceland and the Faroe Islands. The European Commission has imposed sanctions against the Faroe Islands with regard to their non-sustainable fishing of herring but, so far, it has not taken measures against Iceland or the Faroes in respect of their position on the fishing of mackerel stock.
