More than 20 years after the genocide that befell it in 1994, Rwanda has largely succeeded in overcoming ethnic divisions, and improved the human rights of its citizens in many respects. However, a lack of political space for dissent, and serious restrictions on the freedom of expression, remain major areas of concern.
