Circular economy package: Four legislative proposals on waste

04-07-2018

Although waste management in the EU has improved considerably in recent decades, over a quarter of municipal waste is still landfilled and less than half is recycled or composted, with wide variations between Member States. Improving waste manage¬ment could deliver positive effects for the environment, climate, human health and the economy. Improving waste manage¬ment could deliver positive effects for the environment, climate, human health and the economy. As part of a shift towards a circular economy, the European Commission made four legislative proposals introducing new waste-management targets regarding reuse, recycling and landfilling, strengthening provisions on waste prevention and extended producer responsibility, and streamlining definitions, reporting obligations and calculation methods for targets. After completion of the legislative procedure, the final acts were signed on 30 May 2018. Member States are required to transpose the directives into national law by 5 July 2020. This updates an earlier edition, of March 2018: PE 614.766.

Research for TRAN Committee - Charging infrastructure for electric road vehicles

20-06-2018

This study analyses the various challenges of the deployment of charging infrastructure within the EU. This includes existing technologies and standardisation issues, metering systems and pricing schemes, business and financing models, the impact of the charging infrastructure on the dissemination of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs), and the appropriateness of current technologies, business models, and public policies.

Charging infrastructure for electric vehicles

05-04-2017

As most of the energy used for transport in the EU is dependent on oil, facilitating the transition to low-emission mobility is key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 40 % below 1990 levels by 2030. Although electric vehicles (EVs) are making inroads into the European automotive fleet, the market for EVs cannot grow unless users can charge them. Accelerating infrastructure development across the EU is therefore crucial to support the transition to a decarbonised transport sector.

What if the energy grid needed cars?

19-09-2016

Smart transportation is widely seen as creating a world in which the vehicles of the future have the ability to make decisions without human input. But in addition, car batteries can serve as an electricity storage mechanism, supporting stabilisation of the electricity grid through vehicle-to-grid technology.   Please click here for the full publication in PDF format

Energy Storage: Which Market Designs and Regulatory Incentives Are Needed?

01-12-2015

As presented in the study 'Energy Storage: Which Market Designs and Regulatory Incentives Are Needed?', energy storage is accomplished by various technologies for the release of energy at a later time and potentially involves conversion from one form of energy to another, both before storage and at the time of release. This leaflet presents the key findings of this study. Link to the original publication: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/RegData/etudes/STUD/2015/563469/IPOL_STU(2015)563469_EN.pdf

Alternative transport fuels: infrastructure needed

29-10-2013

The development of alternative fuels for transport is a necessity to reduce the EU's dependence on imports of crude oil, as well as to decarbonise transport and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, the use of rechargeable battery packs, hydrogen or natural gas in road or waterways transport is notably hampered by the lack of infrastructure for recharging or refuelling.
