Attacks on lawyers defending human rights have increased in many countries over the last years, including in Europe. The hearing aims at providing an overview of the latest developments (including testimonies of persecuted lawyers), to present and assess the existing EU tools to support lawyers/human rights defenders worldwide and to reflect on possible further initiatives at EU and multilateral level to improve the situation.

The workshop should address the potential offered by the energy transition to transform EU conventional industrial
processes and preserve employment. It should also explore the role of hydrogen in opening new windows of opportunity in energy flexibility, availability, security, as well as improved efficiency contributing to the decarbonisation of the economy.
The case of energy transition in phasing out coal from the electricity generation sector in Germany should be taken into account.

The workshop will be held on 19 February from 10.30 to 12.30.

It is organised by Policy Department A at the request of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE). Please note that the workshop will be webstreamed.

Life cycle of eels and external threats illustration

The diversity of detrimental factors for the European eel stock and the number of involved stakeholders complicate eel stock management. Knowledge on the economic impact of management measures is required to better assess implications for stakeholders. This workshop will provide an overview of impacts and management measures and provide economic data from European hydropower and fisheries sectors in order to estimate repercussions of eel management measures for stakeholders.

On 19th of February, from 14:30 to 17:00, two panels will shed light on the complex issues of fifth generation wireless mobile standard (5G), taking on board the experience gathered from ongoing 5G trials across the European Union.

The hearing will also address the question on how different technologies, such as ubiquitous sensors, small cells, space technologies and artificial intelligence applications combine to create new services and to significantly enhance the user experience for communications, applications, digital content and e-commerce.
The hearing will also tackle the issue of barriers and difficulties in 5G rollout within the scope of latest EUs regulatory framework. Finally, the hearing will allow understanding how 5G, as enabler of very highspeed connectivity, can unlock the world of AI.

Landing obligation is a long-standing policy goal of the EU Common Fisheries Policy that requires fishers to bring all catch ashore eliminating discards at sea. The policy has been phased in gradually over the years and is fully implemented starting this year, 2019. The speakers’ profiles combine first-hand industry expertise with scientific analysis. The audience would receive the most recent overview about the implementation of this important component of the fisheries policy.

In the light of the recent Paris attacks, MEPs vote to make Europol, the European police office, more effective and urge Member States to fully cooperate.

The fourth meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol (JPSG) will take place 24-25 February 2019 in Bucharest. The JPSG brings together Members of national parliaments and the European Parliament to fulfill the scrutiny and oversight on the activities of Europol including on fundamental rights. The JPSG meets at least twice a year. It is Co-Chaired by the European Parliament and the country holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
