Members of the PEST Committee will visit the Domaine d’Époisses (Bretenière) - National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) in Dijon and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon from 19 to 20 September 2018.

The delegation will be composed of Mr Eric Andrieu (S&D, Chair and Head of delegation), Mr Miroslav Mikolášik (EPP), Ms Angélique Delahaye (EPP), Mr Arne Gericke (ECR), Ms Anja Hazekamp (GUE/NGL), Mr Bart Staes (Greens/EFA) and Mr Piernicola Pedicini (EFDD). Additionally, Ms Sylvie Guillaume (S&D), Ms Michèle Rivasi (Greens/EFA) and Ms Mireille d'Ornano (EFDD) will take part in the mission as local Member of the European Parliament.

The aim of the workshop is to give Members the chance to explore in detail the impacts of Brexit on industry and space policy for the EU27. Three high level speakers will give a general overview of the potential impacts of Brexit; consider the implications for EU business; and examine the implications for EU space policy. Their presentations will be followed by a question and answer session with Members.

The workshop is organised by the Policy Department for Economic, Scientific and Quality of Life Policies at the request of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE).

The workshop will be held on 24 September 2018 from 15.00 - 16.00.

Please note that no special registration is available for the workshop. While the workshop is in principle open to the public, you need to have access to the European Parliament to be able to attend. Alternatively you can follow the workshop via webstreaming.

24-09-2018 15:00 - Third meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group (JPSG) on Europol

In the light of the recent Paris attacks, MEPs vote to make Europol, the European police office, more effective and urge Member States to fully cooperate.

The third meeting of the JPSG will take place 24-25 September 2018 at the European Parliament, Brussels. The meeting that brings together Members of national parliaments and the European Parliament will meet to fulfill the scrutiny and oversight on the activities of Europol including on fundamental rights. The JPSG meets at least twice a year. It is Co-Chaired by the European Parliament and the country holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

New technologies have the potential to free up workers to do more productive tasks and to provide consumers with access to better products and services. While technology will likely change the nature of many existing jobs, some of them may become redundant. New OECD research suggests that 14% of jobs across 32 countries are highly likely to be automated, and another 32% may experience significant changes. This EPRS policy roundtable with the OCDE discusses the issues.

The purpose of the hearing is to identify and share the best practices for enhancing equality between women and men in the workplace as implemented by employers (big companies) as well as to discuss the practical implications of a developed network of care services for women's participation at the labour market.

The state of the debate on the future of Europe

On Wednesday 10 October, from 14:30 to 18:30, the Committee on Constitutional Affairs will hold an Interparliamentary Committee Meeting entitled "State of the debate on the future of Europe". The main aim of this ICM is to allow MEPs and MPs to discuss together in view to assess institutional and political evolutions that have followed the adoption of Parliaments resolutions of 16 February 2017, on "Improving the functioning of the European Union building on the potential of the Lisbon Treaty"

(Bresso/Brok report), on "Possible evolutions of and adjustments to the current institutional set-up of the European Union" (Verhofstadt report) and on "Budgetary capacity for the euro area" (Böge/Berès report), taking stock of the different proposals recently presented by relevant institutions and Member States and thus preparing European Parliament's priorities concerning current debate on the future of Europe.

The debate will be opened with Statements by the AFCO Chair Ms Hübner and the Chair of EU Committee of Austrian Parliament, Mr Christian Buchmann, as well by the Minister Ms Juliane Bogner-Strauß as Austrian Council Presidency, and Mr Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the European Commission. Mr Joaquín Almunia, former Vice President of the Commission will be the invited expert to address to national MPs.

The AFCO Rapporteur Ramón Jáuregui and the ECON Rapporteur for an opinion Ivana Maletić will present their proposals.

Under its Religion & Society book presentation series, the EP hosts Andrew Copson, Chief Executive of Humanists UK, presenting his book 'Secularism: Politics, Religion, and Freedom' (Oxford University Press). The book traces the history of secularism from the 18th century and looks at how secular states deal with religious identity politics, religious states with secularism. It asks how secularism links with issues like blasphemy, religious persecution and discrimination, freedom of belief.
