EU Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust)

Since its creation in 2002, Eurojust has become a central player in judicial cooperation in criminal matters. Considering the expected rise in international criminal activity in the coming years, there is a need to reinforce its role and enhance its efficiency in tackling cross-border criminality. Article 85 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU (TFEU) provides for such a possibility. It covers new types of confiscation orders, speeds up procedures and ensures victims' rights to compensation and restitution. The European Commission has adopted a proposal which would allow it to request business-related information (e.g. pricing policy) directly from market participants. The legal basis for the proposal, however, has raised some criticism. The European Parliament is due to vote during its October I plenary session on the proposal.

Free flow of non-personal data in the EU

In 2017, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a regulation on a framework for the free flow of non-personal data across the EU. This proposal was presented as one of the key actions in the mid-term review of the Digital Single Market strategy. Sign languages in the EU

European Languages Day on 26 September is devoted to the variety of languages spoken by EU citizens. However, not all people can speak, or hear others speaking. Some use sign languages, which policy-makers consider in the context of the rights of people with disabilities, or as a linguistic minority right. The United Nations has launched International Day of Sign Languages, to be celebrated for the first time on 23 September 2018.

ASEP10 gives priority to climate change

The 10th Asia-Europe Parliamentary Meeting (ASEP10) will take place at the European Parliament in Brussels on 27 and 28 September 2018. The meeting will focus on climate change and environmental challenges. The final declaration will be transmitted to the 12th ASEM Summit, to be held in Brussels on 18 and 19 October 2018.
