Belarus is the only European country where the death penalty is still applied. Opposition politicians have disappeared, the President has stifled all forms of budding protests with violence; and authorities continue to harass human rights activists and independent journalists. Despite the softening in EU-Belarus ties and the newly lifted sanctions, the overall human rights situation under President Lukashenko's autocratic rule has yet to improve.

Human rights abuse is one of the most complex and challenging issues in Pakistan today. The EU has expressed concerns about the human rights situation and monitors events closely.

Professor Manfred Nowak, former UN Special Rapporteur on torture, who co-authored in 2010 a major UN report on secret detention with a global scope, concludes that the currently available information underscores the necessity for establishing independent institutions to conduct prompt investigations into any allegation of secret detention.
