The Pacific island countries (PICs) attribute great importance to the outcome of the Paris Climate Conference (COP21), as climate change threatens their very existence. Ahead of COP21, the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) adopted a common declaration on climate change, constituting a compromise between small Pacific island countries on one side and Australia and New Zealand on the other.

Development in the Pacific region is uneven, multi-layered and challenging. The European Union’s development cooperation with the Pacific is significant; in fact the EU is the second largest donor of development assistance to the region.
