The Policy Dialogue “EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ELECTIONS - CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF NEW DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES” will bring together Members of European Parliament and staff with academics from the European University Institute (https://www.eui.eu//) via video-conference between Florence and Brussels. The academics invited have done important research on the impact of informational tools on their users in the context of democratic elections.

With back-up from Social and Political Science they have identified trends concerning possible information biases from new digital technologies as well as new technological opportunities to improve election campaigns. In view of the upcoming European elections of 23-26 May 2019, experts will present aspects of their research on the topic over the last years: Prof Giovanni Sartor: "European Parliament elections and digital tools." Prof Pier Luigi Parcu: "Digital technologies' challenges to media and democracy." Prof Dino Pedreschi: "Effects of algorithmic bias in social media platforms." Prof Andrea Calderaro: "Artificial Intelligence (AI), democracy and cybersecurity." Prof Diego Garzia: "Technological opportunities to improve turnout in EP elections." Prof Dr Danuta Huebner (Chair of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs) will introduce the event from the point of view of European Politics from the European Parliament in Brussels. The LIBE and FEMM Committees are jointly presenting the new report of the European Institute for Gender Equality on "Gender-specific measures in anti-trafficking actions". The report includes guidance on the implementation of the anti-trafficking directive in a gender specific manner. Guest speakers will be Dr Myria Vassiliadou, EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator and Ms Virginia Langbakk, Director of the Europe Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE).

TAX3 - EPRS presentation of studies on “Golden visas, free ports, and shell companies in the EU: Money laundering, Tax evasion and Tax avoidance risks”

During its meeting on 18 October, the Parliament’s Research Service (EPRS) will present three ‘in-house’ studies that were commissioned by the TAX3 coordinators as part of the fact finding work of the Committee. Following each presentation there will be rounds of questions and answers.

The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs with the support of the Directorate for relations with National Parliaments organises an Interparliamentary Committee meeting (ICM) on "Fundamental rights aspects of Roma inclusion and fighting anti-Gypsyism". The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 18 October 2018, from 14.30 to 18.00, in the European Parliament premises in Brussels.

The inter-parliamentary committee meeting aims to promote an exchange of views between European and national Parliamentarians on barriers to Roma inclusion and possibilities to overcome them. The meeting envisages the participation of the Council of Europe, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR), as well as presentations from NGOs, bringing the global and the non-institutional perspective into the discussions.

Under its Religion & Society book presentation series, the EP hosts Andrew Copson, Chief Executive of Humanists UK, presenting his book 'Secularism: Politics, Religion, and Freedom' (Oxford University Press). The book traces the history of secularism from the 18th century and looks at how secular states deal with religious identity politics, religious states with secularism. It asks how secularism links with issues like blasphemy, religious persecution and discrimination, freedom of belief.

The European Parliament has made full use of its powers to contribute to shaping the EU's policies and instruments in advancing human rights both inside and outside the EU. To renew this unshakeable commitment to the subject, the European Parliament will hold a High Level Conference to reflect on the core principles of human rights as set out in the UDHR: universality, inter-dependence and indivisibility, while at the same time addressing new challenges in a global and digital world

The President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani will open the conference in the presence of Vice President/High Representative Federica Mogherini, United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, General Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Fatou Bensouda, Secretary General of the Council of Europe Mr Thorbjørn Jagland, Chair of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights Ms Soyata Maiga, and several other dignitaries.
