Alyn Smith MEP speaks at The Gathering, 22 February 2017
On 22 February we hosted a discussion at The Gathering, the UK's largest third sector event, in Glasgow with Alyn Smith MEP; Alison Cairns, Head of European Unit at SCVO; and Shelley Talbot, Programme Manager at Xchange Scotland, to explore how the sector should approach the challenges likely to be faced following the UK's decision to withdraw from the European Union.
The speakers begun the session by presenting their expectations and concerns in regards to issues such as continued access to EU funding and citizens' rights, including those of the nearly 80,000 EU citizens who work within the third sector in the UK. Alyn Smith MEP advised members of the audience to use their representatives in Holyrood, Westminster and the European Parliament to ensure their opinions and suggestions are heard as the Brexit negotiations progress.
Moderator Mandy Rhodes, Managing Director of Holyrood Communication, then led a Q&A session with the audience, who expressed unease about the months ahead and were keen to explore ways that the sector can work together to influence the Brexit process as it develops.
