Sakharov Prize debate at University of Glasgow

Students from University of Glasgow hosted, with the support of the European Information Office in Edinburgh, a debate on the 2017 Sakharov Prize finalists.

The EPIO visited the University of Glasgow to take part in a debate hosted by a group of students, to discuss this year’s Sakharov Prize nominees. The students were divided into 6 groups, each representing one of the 6 nominees for the prize, in order to debate how and why each candidate has made valuable contributions to support human rights and the broader issues they represent. This year's nominees for the Sakharov Prize include: Aura Lolita Chavez Ixcaquic, the Democratic Opposition in Venezuela, and the Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak, Asia Bibi, Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag and Pierre Claver Mbonimpa. The debate finished with an engaging discussion on the further implications for human rights and advocacy.
