Ahead of the next European Parliamentary elections taking place between 22nd and 25th May 2014, the Scottish Youth Parliament and the European Parliament Office in Edinburgh held the Audio Europa competition, designed to give young people across Scotland the chance to share their views on why it is important to vote.

Ahead of the next European Parliamentary elections taking place between 22nd and 25th May 2014, the Scottish Youth Parliament and the European Parliament Office in Edinburgh presented the Audio Europa competition designed to give young people across Scotland the chance to share their views on why it is important to vote. Participants could win the chance to spend a day shadowing the work of one of Scotland’s MEPs and participate in a range of European democracy related activity. A shortlist of clips was put online and the result of the votes was announced 16th December.

We asked youngsters to produce a short audio clip explaining why they believe their peers should be participating in the upcoming European elections.

The clips entered into the competition were whittled down to a list of 50 and assessed by a panel of judges. They chose 12 clips to be hosted on the Scottish Youth Parliament website and everyone had a chance to vote for their favourite!

187 individual entries were submitted to the competition and thus over 200 people entered the competition. Over 1900 votes were cast for the winner. Kyle Thornton, MSYP and chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament handed out the certificates to the winners together with Marta Majchrzyk after Björn Kjellström, head of the European Parliament office in the UK in London addressed the people that had gathered for the reception and award ceremony.
