SERN Annual Meeting
The European Commission Representation in Scotland and the Edinburgh Information Office of the European Parliament jointly hosted the annual meeting of the Scottish European Resources Network (SERN) at the European Parliament Office on November 26th.
The SERN consists of EU information providers from across Scotland, and hosts several meetings a year where topical evens are discussed. The theme for this year's annual meeting was "How does Scotland influence EU policy and legislation?". One of the speakers was Struan Stevenson, MEP for Scotland, who talked about the new subsidiarity mechanisms under the Lisbon Treaty, which allows national parliaments to scrutinise EU legislative proposals. He also noted the increased influence of the European Parliament in many areas of public policy of particular interest to many Scots, notably agriculture and fisheries. The full text of Mr. Stevenson's speech is available here.
Other speakers at the event were Roger Knox, who sits on East Lothian Council and is a member of the Committee of the Regions, and Deborah Snow of the Europe Division of the Scottish Government. The event was chaired by Neil Mitchison, the head of the European Commission office in Scotland.
