World Congress on Active Ageing 13th-17th August

On 13th-17th August, the European Parliament Office in Scotland participated in the 8th World Congress on Active Ageing 2012, held at Glasgow's Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. The event brought together scientists, academics, representatives of many professional interests and members of the general public to discuss active ageing across society.

Scottish MEP David Martin spoke at the opening ceremony of the Congress. Besides welcoming the delegates to Scotland, he discussed the origins of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations and spoke about EU activities and policies in related areas. He also set out a number of yardsticks by which to judge the success of the Year, for instance progress on addressing health inequalities, where he cited divergent statistics from different parts of Glasgow as his example. Austrian MEP Heinz Becker also participated in the Congress.

During the week, activities included participation events like Scottish Dancing and IT classes, alongside Plenary Keynote talks on subjects, from physical activity in the prevention of dementia to the importance of engaging built environments. The Edinburgh Office and the European Commission Office jointly hosted a stand in the Congress' Exhibition, discussing both the European Year 2012, and how to promote good practice in various sectors with visitors.
